Robbed and Beaten

Who Let the Robber in?

Colossians 2:8 Be careful not to let anyone rob you of this faith through a shallow and misleading philosophy. Such a person follows human traditions and the world’s way of doing things rather than following Christ.

Defining the players here is frightening.  There are those who wish to ROB you of your faith.  They will use these tools to do it:

  • shallow philosophy – looks great on the surface, hits all of your need buttons and seems to answer nagging questions
  • misleading philosophy – misdirection is a foundation of crime, directing your eyes in one direction while pilfering your pockets and your heart at the same time.
  • human traditions – ‘everybody’s doing it’ has lead many a duped victim down dark allies to be robbed of their faith.
  • the world’s way of doing things – Jesus does it differently despite the world’s values, values on time, who’s worth your time, where you should spend your time, Jesus is in clear conflict with the world’s values.  The world gauges on the benefits to you, Jesus on the benefits from you; the worthy are those of standing, Jesus’ worthiness helps those who cannot stand.

If you haven’t been robbed you don’t know the combination of anger, fear and helplessness that you experience.  We double lock our possessions, we arm ourselves with bullet and club, we set our security systems but do we guard our faith with any such tenacity.  There are those who would rob you of your faith with fearsome tools such as these.

Knowing Christ, loving in a way contrary to the world’s love, living your faith among those who wish to rob you and arming yourself with the Word of God.  The unique and important point is that the robbing isn’t involuntary, we must understand the last player here: you.  Be careful NOT TO LET anyone rob you.  We are courageous to enter that world, eyes focused on the cross, knowing that it is Christ who has given us a gift that no one can destroy.
