Temple Stones

Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever.  He will guide us forever.  Psalm 48:12-14

Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”  Matthew 24:1-2

Why not point them out like the disciples did, Psalm 48 told them to?  They were to be signs that God was with them and guiding them.  They were the signs of the covenant.  However when the living and breathing fulfillment of the covenant is walking with you as you point these out and says they are to be thrown down something has gone terribly wrong.  God choses you, God makes a promise to you, a covenant with you and then you respond.  God waited for the response that never came.  They pointed to rocks and not the nations around them.  They pointed to the temple instead of the people who were to come to the temple mountain because of joy and life-blessing life Yahweh gave to those he chose.  They point to the ones chosen instead of the ones God chose to bless through them.  Now those rocks will be thrown down and there will be nothing at which to point.

Perhaps the stone thrown down at the empty tomb will be enough.
