Census, Results

Readings for August 23rd

“And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.”  1 Kings 3:8

I wonder if Solomon was thinking back to David’s experience with the census.  It didn’t turn out so well, it was never completed and it didn’t result in better schools and community services.  Instead there was a three day plague that killed 70,000 people.  Oddly though the altar that David built to ask God to stop the plague was at Araunah’s threshing floor and would be the location of the temple that Solomon would build.

Solomon in 1 Kings 3 is preparing to lead the people as king and is offered by God one request.  One possibility would be to know how many people he ruled, how big his army would be, how much taxes he would charge, how much grain to expect but instead he left it at “too many to number” and requested wisdom.  How wise to ask for wisdom (isn’t the very request of asking God wise?)!
