Readings for June 22nd

“One does not choose a Redeemer for oneself, you understand, nor give one’s heart to him.  The heart is a rusty old can on a junk heap.  A fine birthday gift, indeed! But a wonderful Lord passes by, and has mercy on the wretched tin can, sticks his walking cane through it, and rescues it from the junk pile and takes it home with him, That is how it is.”
– Bo Giertz

To give your heart you have to have it to give.  Givers are possessors first.  Of the two we are neither.  We don’t own ourselves we are lost to sin.  We don’t give ourselves if we are in chains.  That’s what a redeemer does, takes the powerless and pays a price he had no reason to pay giving the valueless value, the powerless power as gift from the unknown redeemer.
