Exodus 22 – Important people

Exodus 22 makes the case the some of the most important people are: widows, orphans, the poor, the sojourner and the enemy.  Each of them is afforded special treatment.  Special deference and care to the widows and orphans.  Interest free loans and the return of collateral to the poor.   All of them are to be given the produce of the fields on the 7th year.  The sojourner is not to be oppressed.  I like how Exodus 22 puts the reasoning behind this, because you were sojourners in Egypt.  Basically you were treated poorly, don’t do that to others.  The enemy’s possessions are to be cared for and protected.

This is a profound picture of care far advanced of nearly every culture around them.
