Readings for the Friday after Easter

Exodus 18:17 “What you are doing is not good.”

Moses was judging all the cases of the nation of Israel while in the wilderness.  He was certainly gifted for it.  God had certainly chosen him to be a leader.  He was respected and wise and so he was the one who would judge.  Even when doing everything right being chosen, gifted and respected, he was doing something wrong.  Jethro had clear advice, share the burden, find the other gifted and respected men and choose them to help you.  One of their qualifications I find interesting, “they hate bribes.”  Hating most anything is not well-liked in this culture but perhaps if we could know someone as a bribe-hater, a lie-hater, a sin-hater, that wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
