Freetext – Bless

As I will be hearing in the liturgy of the Seder meal, ‘Blessed are You Lord our God King of the Universe,’ I am reminded of how far we have gone from using Bless in the right way. In the days of Jesus they have found thousands of these prayers, blessing prayers that start similarly to the prayer I just mentioned. When Jesus had a meal and Blessed, he was most likely saying one of these to His Father. Many translations have made a guess and added words like Jesus blessed it (food) because thats what we do. We’ve missed the point. That blessing was just another opportunity to focus on God, to give Him all the glory, to recognize the true source and to worship Him. I guess that’s why they have found blessing prayers for occasions good and bad in other words the object or occasion is less as important as blessing God. Today it has become the blessing of an object or worse, we do good and get our own blessings which in this context borders on the blasphemous.
Just as the Christian should always keep their eyes on the cross so should our prayers focus less on the good or bad but on the God of all things.
