Readings for January 20th

Luther on Baptism – there are 3 parts.  1st part is water – of course, 2nd part is God’s Word – of course; I’m totally tracking there and there is nothing out of the ordinary but the third was not what I expected.  Luther obviously had something to say and he says it well but I expected him to say the one being baptized.  Try doing baptism without that?  Luther points to the third as the “institution” which is the order and command to do it so that kind points to the fact that there is someone baptizing so that the person (not mentioned) is not being baptized by themselves and instead by a pastor (not mentioned) or another believer.

Perhaps this strikes me as funny only because that person is the hardest part of baptism and maybe nowadays that’s where everyone needs to spend more time working on that part of baptism.
