Readings for January 16th

The Wicked Deep

Psalm 36:1-6  What an amazing Psalm!  The first four verses are like  a descent into the depths with the one who flatters himself.  “Trangression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart” is a line that sticks in my head.  Wicked deep I first read as an adjective and noun.  It made me read it over and over.  And the deep was the depths of sin from idolatry (v. 1) to a misperception of his own sin (2) to actions and plans and the cycle of evil that brings (3-4).  Now out of the depths we rise to God to the heavens, to the clouds, to the mountains where we find God’s steadfast love and righteousness (5-6).  Finally God brings judgment even to the great deep (6).
