“It would be perverse and ugly thing indeed to have eyes looking upward and with them to look freely at the sky above and be delighted with the lights of the heavens, while the spiritual and celestial creature, that is, the spiritual part of man, turns its eyes in the opposite direction, as it actually does when the inward feelings and affections of man are bent downwards toward the earth.”   Bernard of Clairvaux
