Readings for January 7th

“Reconciliation and sanctification or renewal” are both benefits of faith in Christ.  I was interested to see how Martin Chemnitz would expand on this since often I reduce the benefits of faith in Christ to reconciliation or forgiveness.  He points right to the Spirit.  “The Spirit of renewal, who works in us both to will and to do, so that after we are justified we can also begin the new obedience.”  Faith doesn’t end with me.  Faith is complete through Jesus Christ, it is salvation and complete because Jesus completed it on the cross, “it is finished.”  However but in contradiction my faith is made to continue into my life in the “will and to do” what God wants me to by loving God and loving neighbor.

  1. I also loved the reading by Martin Chemnitz! My favorite quote “These things are confirmed by sure and clear passages of scripture which establish that the object of justifying faith is not the Word of God in general, but the promise of the benefits of Christ the Mediator… Then how many blessings come to us along with this object of our faith: free reconcilation, remission of sins, imputation of the righteousness of Christ, free acceptance before God, adoption, freedom from the law of sin and the Law, liberation from the curse of the Law, propitiation for our sins, salvation, eternal life communion with God, the inheritance of life and salvation, peace, joy, and hope of the glory of God!
